Since 1990, Pearl Jam has been writing and performing their music. While the band’s guitarists, vocalist, and bassist have remained in the band since its inception, the band has gone through several drummers: Dave Krusen, Matt Chamberlain, Dave Abbruzzese, and Jack Irons.

Dave Krusen has remained active in the music business, drumming for several bands, including Hovercraft, Diamond Star Halo, Candlebox, and Unified Theory. In the 2000s, Krusen kept busy performing with Shawn Snyder in his backing band and drumming for Chyenne Kimball from 2005 to 2007. He continues to perform with numerous artists Read the rest of this entry »

Pearl Jam has been around since 1990 and are a five piece band, so, as you might expect, there are several members who have come and gone in the past in the band’s nearly thirty-year history. Funny enough, they’re all drummers.

Jack Irons was a Pearl Jam drummer and is responsible for introducing guitarist Stone Gossard to singer Eddie Vedder. Later, after drummer Dave Abbruzzese was fired, Irons joined the band as their official drummer. He appeared on the Pearl Jam album, Vitalogy. Irons left the band in 1998, after tiring of touring.

3) The band was named after Vedder’s grandmother, Pearl, and from watching Neil Young when he jammed one song for 20 minutes.

4) If you see the name “Jerome Turner” on Pearl Jam records, that’s Vedder who does art and design-work under the pseudonym.

5) Worldwide sales for Pearl Jam records have topped over 60 million.

6) Politically active, Pearl Jam musicians are members of Rock the Vote and Vote for Change organizations.

7) Before Kurt Cobain died, he and Vedder reconciled their artistic differences over the value of alternative music
8) The Pearl Jam song, “Man of the Hour,” was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

9) Before Pearl Jam, the band went by Temple of the Dog and Mookie Blaylock.

10) The song “Jeremy” is inspired by the story of a 15-year-old boy, who shot himself in front of his classmates.

When it comes to music groups Pearl Jam is considered by many to be one the greatest of all time. This Seattle Grunge group features songs that contain deep lyrics with a trance like sound of soulful rock. The guitar solos in some songs are by any measure phenomenal. With so many fantastic songs narrowing down the best is a difficult but worthy task. Here are the top five most well-known;

Jeremy- This controversial song about an abused boy that commits suicide in front of his entire class is a very beloved Pearl Jam song, but would not be funded by the group’s record label. It has been a fan favorite since its music video’s release in 1992

Better Man- Better Man was written when front runner Eddie Vedder was just 18 years old and with heartfelt lyrics and soothing sound it is easily considered one of the groups best songs.

Daughter- A very inspirational, but sad song about a girl with disabilities. This moving tune became Pearl Jam’s first song to crack the top 40.

Alive- The music for alive was written by guitarist Stone Gossard and was handed around by Gossard in hopes of finding a singer for this brilliant music. Once Eddie Vedder got his hands on it and turned into a story of a boy that finds out his father is not his biological father, Pearl Jam was born.

Black- This emotionally charged song has lyrics that are nothing less than a work of art. Even the least of the Pearl Jam fans can’t escape the brilliance of this tale of love and loss.

How Did Pearl Jam Start Out?

February 7, 2012

The massive pioneering career of Pearl Jam began in Seattle out of tragedy and the ashes of another band. The band Mother Love Bone formed in 1988 with Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament along with the lead singer of Malfunkshun, Andrew Wood. The band began to tour and even got a record deal with Polygram in 1989, but Woods’ untimely death from a heroine overdose in 1990 put an abrupt end to the band. Woods’ death devastated Gossard and Ament, who ceased touring. Gossard spent his time writing music, while Ament took time out.

With new material written, Stone Gossard began practicing with Seattle guitarist Mike McCready who in turn urged him to reconnect with Jeff Ament. As a trio, the three men practiced and worked on a demo using Gossard’s new material in order to attract a drummer and a lead vocalist. The demo was given to Red Hot Chili Peppers’ drummer, Jack Irons, along with an invitation to join the band. Irons declined the invitation but did pass the demo to his friend Eddie Vedder who was the singer for the San Diego band Bad Radio. Vedder recorded some lyrics for an instrumental demo that he sent back to the band. He was given an audition, which proved successful.

The band finally found a drummer by the name of Dave Krusen to complete the line up and began touring under the name Mookie Blaylock. The name was an homage to an all-star basketball player of the time, but would soon be changed for legal reasons when they were signed by Epic Records in late 1990. The band ultimately became known as Pearl Jam, with Ament coming up with the name Pearl and the Jam being added soon after, based on the band attending a Neil Young concert. Young was improvising a lot on stage during the concert, which is a style known as jamming. Pearl Jam recorded their first album “Ten” at Seattle’s London Bridge Studios in March of 1991. A few months later it was released and sold slowly at first before becoming a breakout hit by mid-1992.

Pearl Jam is a band of the ages, the greatest Rock group of the last half century, some say. Their songs lend themselves beautifully to movie soundtracks and they’ve graced quite a few. If you’ve got directv deals at your house watch for the Jam in the background of some of these classics:
Into the Wild: Perhaps the MOST influenced by Pearl Jam, this film featuring Twilight’s Kristin Stewart can thank its melancholy, coming of age vibe from the sounds of Pearl. The band performed just about every song on the soundtrack which is nearly unprecedented.
I Am Sam: This Dakota Fanning/Sean Penn classic has one of the most unique soundtracks of the last decade and it’s all about covers. Pearl Jam covered The Beatles “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” and did a great job doing it.
Big Fish: This cult classic features Man of the Hour, one of the most underrated songs of the Pearl Jam band has put out. It’s a great film with a really atmospheric soundtrack and Pearl Jam plays a big part.

2011 is halfway over but looks like Pearl Jam is just starting to get geared up as if it’s the New Year. The band is getting ready for two major projects here at home and the other, out of the country in South and Central America.
