Everything You Need to Know About Pearl Jam
Pearl Jam is an American rock band, hailing from Seattle Washington. They exploded onto the Grunge scene in the early 1990s when several other well-known modern bands began earning the respect of music fans with their no-nonsense approach to modern Rock music. Releasing many singles and earning a healthy amount of radio airplay, Pearl Jam continues to enjoy an elevated level of popularity with an ever-growing fan base.
Pearl Jam’s name was derived from vocalist Eddie Vedder’s grandmother’s name, which was ‘Pearl’. She was married to a Native American man who gave her a recipe for a special type of hallucinogenic preserves, hence the name ‘Pearl Jam’. Pearl Jam’s original lineup included vocalist Eddie Vedder, guitarists Stone Gossard and Mike McCready, bassist Jeff Ament, and drummer Dave Krusen. Krusen’s tenure in Pearl Jam was short-lived and he left in 1991 to be replaced by Matt Chamberlain.
Pearl Jam’s debut album, ‘Ten’, was released in 1991 and achieved worldwide success, having multiple music videos shot for the singles ‘Alive’, ‘Evenflo’, & ‘Jeremy’. The album went multi-platinum, selling over 8 million units in the just the United States. Pearl Jam toured extensively for the album, drumming up more fans who were eager to hear more of this new kind of alternative music.
Matt Chamberlain was eventually replaced by drummer Dave Abbruzzese for the recording of followup albums ‘Vs’ and ‘Vitalogy’. ‘Vs’ also did extremely well in the USA, quickly selling over 5 million copies. In 1998, Dave Abbruzzese left the band and current drummer, Matt Cameron, was hired.
Aside from continuing to tour extensively and releasing new albums, including their latest effort, ‘Backspacer’ Pearl Jam has become known for humanitarian efforts, such as their pledge to decrease their own carbon footprint. They were named the 2011 ‘planet defenders’ by Rock The Earth for their environmental activism. Pearl Jam are currently working on a followup to 2009′s ‘Backspacer’ and expect it to be released either later this year or in early 2012.
